At what Madison County Republican Party Chairman Pete Kitchen called the largest turnout ever, Republicans from all over Madison County gathered Thursday evening for the party’s annual Lincoln Dinner, held at the First United Methodist Church in London.
Keynoting the event was Republican John Kasich, who is running for the office of governor of Ohio.
In his introductory remarks, Kitchen referred to Kasich as the man who helped balance the federal budget in 1997, “the first time that’s happened since we put a man on the moon.”

Washington Township's former fiscal officer has been charged in Union County with stealing thousands of taxpayer dollars.
A grand jury on Monday indicted Valerie Cox, 49, of Richwood, on two counts of theft in office and two counts of tampering with evidence. Authorities say the crimes took place between January 2006 and July 2009.
Two audits released last week by state Auditor Mary Taylor found that Cox had stolen a total of $37,648 while working for Washington Township and for the North Union School District, where she had served as a high-school secretary.

Kasich made no commitment to the project but said he’d listen.

The former congressman, currently running for governor, said if you want to find a successful, job-creating, charitably giving Ohioan, go to Naples, Fla.
The joke Kasich told Wednesday illustrated one of the largest issues facing Ohio: The consistent departure of young people and families, a so-called "brain drain."
"They go anywhere they think they can have a better chance," he said. "We're losing our seed corn."

Salem News Editorial

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's "State of the State" speech last week was like similar addresses made by most governors. Strickland tried hard to be upbeat, while making it clear that Ohio faces many challenges during the next several years.
Unfortunately, the governor still has not offered a blueprint for how the state will cope with severe budget shortfalls. His speech included no substantive recommendations for balancing the budget in the future.
