Kasich Lays Out Plan for Ohio

Northwest Signal
March 11, 2010

Republican candidate for governor John Kasich stopped in the River City Wednesday and said Ohio needs to change how it works with businesses in order to be successful.

Kasich, realizing he is not very well known in the northwestern part of the state, has been hitting several counties in the area the last few days. He said Wednesday Ohio taxes businesses too much and spends too much money in the wrong areas of education.

“We have a culture of regulation that doesn’t reflect Ohio values,” Kasich said. “People either leave the state or don’t come here at all.”

Kasich Visits NW Ohio

The Crescent-News
March 11, 2010

Republican John Kasich is confident he can win Ohio's gubernatorial race in November, but you'd expect that from a candidate facing an incumbent with lukewarm poll numbers.

You'd also not be surprised to hear that from a former mover and shaker in Washington who once chaired the U.S. House of Representatives' budget committee and helped shepherd a federal surplus.

That accomplishment might be unfathomable now, but the former nine-term U.S. congressman believes that if he can work such magic in Washington he can convince enough elected officials in Columbus to make the difficult decisions that will make Ohio's government run more efficiently.

John Kasich told his Van Wert audience Tuesday he gets it. As chair of the House Budget Committee, Kasich helped balance the federal budget and create a surplus in the 1990s.

Washington Township's former fiscal officer has been charged in Union County with stealing thousands of taxpayer dollars.

A grand jury on Monday indicted Valerie Cox, 49, of Richwood, on two counts of theft in office and two counts of tampering with evidence. Authorities say the crimes took place between January 2006 and July 2009.

Two audits released last week by state Auditor Mary Taylor found that Cox had stolen a total of $37,648 while working for Washington Township and for the North Union School District, where she had served as a high-school secretary.

Kasich made no commitment to the project but said he’d listen.

Port Clinton News Herald

The former congressman, currently running for governor, said if you want to find a successful, job-creating, charitably giving Ohioan, go to Naples, Fla.

"They go anywhere they think they can have a better chance," he said. "We're losing our seed corn."

Ohio Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, like many incumbents across the country, is sliding into deep trouble when racked up against his Republican opponent, former Ohio congressman John Kasich.

Strickland Needs To Get Serious About Looming Shortfalls

Salem News Editorial
February 4, 2010

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland's "State of the State" speech last week was like similar addresses made by most governors. Strickland tried hard to be upbeat, while making it clear that Ohio faces many challenges during the next several years.

Unfortunately, the governor still has not offered a blueprint for how the state will cope with severe budget shortfalls. His speech included no substantive recommendations for balancing the budget in the future.
