Making tough decisions in the Auditor of State's office.

Ohio's hardworking families are making tough choices about spending their money on the things they need versus the things they want. Mary knows personally the sacrifices some Ohio families have made to balance their own budgets especially when a parent has to tell a young son "no you can't play travel baseball this year because we simply can't afford it". And, she knows that it's time for our government to make similar sacrifices. That is why she is reforming the Auditor of State's office to reduce spending, improve efficiency and make the bold choices Ohioans elected her to make.

These are just a few of Mary Taylor's budget measures that are saving taxpayers millions of dollars:

  • Absorbed state budget reductions or returned to the state general revenue fund nearly $6 million since taking office
  • Implemented a two percent employee pay cut to save $1 million in fiscal year 2010
  • Established an early retirement plan to save more than $500,000 to date
  • Provided employees with a voluntary cost savings day program to save nearly $25,000 in fiscal year 2009
  • Consolidated Columbus office locations to save $80,000 annually
  • Renegotiated rental lease agreements to save nearly $50,000 in fiscal year 2010

Cutting costs and improving efficiency in local governments and schools

Some in government believe the only way to make up for a looming budget deficit is to raise taxes on Ohio's families. Not Mary Taylor. That is why she is providing government and school leaders with ways to reduce spending and improve efficiency.

  • Offered solutions on how to reduce spending by more than $142.5 million annually by looking at how other governments across Ohio and the country are doing the same work better
  • Piloted a project that has reduced participant audit costs by an average of 13 percent annually
  • Eliminated equipment fees for the use of high-tech accounting software saving local governments $765,000 this year alone

Fighting fraud and corruption in government

Trusted public officials victimize entire communities when they steal your tax dollars. To fight fraud and corruption in government, Mary Taylor has implemented a cutting edge fraud detection and prevention program to catch fraudsters, help put them behind bars and get your tax dollars back.

  • Developed the comprehensive Fraud Reporting System that allows Ohioans to blow the whistle on government fraud and corruption
  • Identified $25.7 million in government fraud and misspending
  • Reported more than $7.5 million in Medicaid abuse
