Improving Job Training

Home > Where We Stand > Improving Job Training

The Problem:
Nearly 400,000 Ohioans have lost their jobs since Ted Strickland took office and 16,000 businesses have disappeared. Ohioans need to be able to retrain and improve their skills, and businesses need skilled workers to be able to succeed. With 52 separate funding sources being managed by eight different state agencies, Ohio’s job training system is too bureaucratic to be effective and only 15 percent of Ohio’s businesses use it.

We Can Do Better:
John Kasich and Mary Taylor want to improve Ohio’s job training programs so they can better meet the needs of workers and businesses. To improve the system we must

  • Make Ohio’s job training programs easier for businesses to access by consolidating authority and responsibility.
  • Improve the programs’ efficiency and effectiveness by reorganizing and simplifying the process for managing job training funds.
  • Train workers in high-demand skills by making it easier for businesses to custom-design job training programs that target their needs, especially in fields like advanced manufacturing, health care and information technology.
